Sliders Academy Awards: Best Concept

If there's one thing Sliders' suffers no shortage of, it's great ideas. The execution may be lacking, but the concept is incredible.

There are dozens of episodes worthy of this award, but I can only pick one. And despite the presence of some phenominally successful episodes, I keep drifting back to one that could have been better. My pick for Best Concept is:

World Killer
By Marc Scott Zicree

I nearly salivated when I saw the description for this episode at Sci-Fi. Not only does it feature a disturbing opening world where Quinn's double is the last man on earth, but he's also responsible for it. It's a beautiful "what if" scenario, except instead of looking to the historical past, it looks back to "the Pilot" itself and asks what would have happened had Quinn really jacked up the power. In addition, an opportunity is set-up for both social satire and commentary with the overpopulation world created by Quinn's mistake. Third, it's a perfect character development episode at this point in time because our Quinn is growing increasingly reckless and remorseless. This double could have been a major wake-up call.

It's combination of continuity, innovative application of the technology (slidewave), character and social satire/commentary could have been unmatched. It just wasn't executed to its full potential, the major weakness being the delivery of Overpopulation Earth. But conceptually, this was a beaut and could have been the biggest episode since it debuted in March of '95.

Your picks (and I suspect it will be very varied)?

Almost as >:-#-ed up as BT!!!

I'll have to go with JRD's original concept for Exodus that was royally >:-#-ed up!!! (Yes, I'm just teasing, I know what you were really asking, but I really do think his original concept for that ep was fantastic)

I didn't get the idea that he originally intended for that ep to be his last, so it would have just been a very cool ep, not his curtain call.

And the winner is...

The winner of the sq21 vote, that is...

I have to say Post Traumatic Slide Syndrome. Now, I know that this episode will probably rake in a couple of awards just because its popular, but I think its very deserving here.

Who would have thought that the producers would even consider an episode like this as early in the series as they did. Maybe they knew that things were not good, so they had to push it out before its time(IMO).

Now, I was not there to watch it live(one of the episodes I missed), and when I finally saw it, I knew they weren't really home.

But I can definitely understand the magic that many of you all saw.

It was an ingenious concept, and IMO, deserves this award... :-)

Exodus is still cool the way it is.

And what do you mean live? None of them were filmed in front of a "Live audience" It`s not a sitcom.

I'm pretty sure that in this case, live means first airing of the episode.

My choice would have to be The Pilot episode. I know. Its not a very orginal choice. But the idea for that episode was still good.

the Oscar goes to ....

I can't bring myself to give it to any other episode but "Post Traumatic Slide Syndrome" and here's why. When you look at this one more closely, the concept of this episode is not really the sliders thinking they found home. The real concept of this episode is how the sliders are dealing with their situation (being lost and unable to find their way home) and the emotional turmoil of being in that situation being brought to the forefront after 18 months of sliding and having the proverbial rug pulled out from under them after they think they finally made it home. Also, just to complicate matters even further, they now have to deal with the possibility that one of their own (Arturo) may have been replaced by a double. Rembrant may have been the one to visit the shrink but really it could as well been any one of the other 3 sliders in that office (well, except Arturo if he really isn't the "original"). The overall concept was not only brillant but (and I know that doesn't count here) it was also executed flawlessly.

And my vote goes to...

...the poster above me!

When the premise of "The Seer" first went public, I was ecstatic. Not only had they *finally* hit on the "Sliders as a TV show" premise that fans had been bandying about in fiction since time out of mind, but the show-within-a-show would star the *original characters,* played by the actual stunt doubles from the FOX days.

As if *that* all wasn't enough, the story was apparently conceived based on fan requests. "It appears that production heeded our continued requests for a story that would reunite the old cast with the new...and they did it in the best way they could with this story. And that is not an extrapolation by me [Tf]...this is what I was told."

If Sliders had to end, it seemed they would be going out with an old-fashioned, comedic bang.

And what did we end up with instead? A ridiculously sub-par script that as usual, introduced more loose ends than it tied off. The show-within-a-show was reduced to what Lunchboy called a "minor piece of business," and the tribute to the fans was downgraded to an insult about "too much time on their hands."

Oh well. I'll always remember "The Seer" as the episode that *could* well have single-handedly raised my opinion of S5 from "slightly better than S3 and 4" to "slightly below S1 and 2".
