Tracy Torme wants you all to Know!

Recently I had a lengthy conversation with Sliders creator, himself Tracy Torme. In the conversation I asked if there was any truth to the rumour that he was no longer involved with the UPN/Howard Stern show Doomsday. The show was a proposed apocalyptic cartoon with bits of dramedy and science fiction intertwined was supposed to make it's debut earlier in the year. TT claers up what stalled the project and why it happened. I also mention Sliders, Sliders:The Motion picture and a boatload of other stuff. Read it for yourself:

jerry_o_who: Say it aint so! Have you really been booted off "Doomsday"???

Tracy Torme: no

jerry_o_who: Thanks

Tracy Torme: where did you hear that?

jerry_o_who: Numerous scifi message boards, movie sites etc.

Tracy Torme: doomsday is on hiatus - i havent made a choice as to how ill be involved - in the meantime i created three new shows all in development with three networks - turned in the complete one hour pilot of the first this past friday

Tracy Torme: the only reason i wouldnt go back to doomsday is because upn are the worst people to work with in the universe they have alienated everyone

Tracy Torme: hope that answers the question

jerry_o_who: Sure does, thanks for being so honest. I hope they all come into being. Are they science fiction, comedy or like sliders, a little of both?

Tracy Torme: Yes Kun Pow is mostly comedy with a touch of the fantastic True Tales of Terror is anthology like twiligt zone but with a reality element and Domination is flat out urban paranoia parallax view meets invasion of the body snatchers but without aliens

Tracy Torme: kung pow

Tracy Torme: sorry

jerry_o_who: Are either of the three animated or are these all live action?

Tracy Torme: but i do have something in early development with trilogy that is flat out sci fi takes place in space has six new alien races in it early title is higher power. All live two are hours one is half hour

jerry_o_who: Sounds awesome

Tracy Torme: thanks for your questions you can feel free to mention this to whoever you like just please be accurate you know how things get out of hand on the net

jerry_o_who: You bet. One last thing

Tracy Torme: okay

jerry_o_who: Before I go, any truth to Mr. weiss's Sliders film claim? Sorry if you've been asked that alot

Tracy Torme: which is? You mean that theres a film in the works?

jerry_o_who: Yes, that he's still ressurecting the series into a movie

Tracy Torme: i was with bob last weekend we talked about it briefly some one had once asked him if hed be interested in doing a film (someone on the net) he said sure thats interesting and they vamped about it a little a what if conversation...

jerry_o_who: nothing definate.

Tracy Torme: he mentioned it to me a short time later i said sure if it happened i might be interested if we could get the original cast and return to the original concept thats about it sorry to say. So whats been said about me "getting booted" from doomsday?

jerry_o_who: Nothing negative. if anything it was mostly Pro-Torme. UPN just wasn't satisfied with the scripts Howards Stern also said that he was disatisfied with the scripts on the radio too. He said there good but not good enough yet. Said they need just a bit more tweaking.

Tracy Torme: they are such idiots they bought the show bought 13 epidsodes then didnt get anything we were trying to do tried to take all the sci fi elements out

Tracy Torme:it was a constant struggle. oh youre talking about the dean valentine quote he made at some press conference overseas yes that came out about six weeks ago meaningless really

jerry_o_who: Once it makes it on the air, is your name still on the credits, if it is, do you still want it to be? Being that it's been altered from your original approach /vision.

Tracy Torme: its my creation mine alone they couldnt take my name off it even if i wanted them to

jerry_o_who: Kind a like your creative consultant title on Season 4 of Peckinpah's Sliders? Which was pure trash. by the way.

Tracy Torme: i left halfway through season three yes decided to leave COMPLETELY had nothing to do with show after my episode The Guardian

jerry_o_who: Fabulous ep. Did you have Arturo's disease in mind since the beggining, or was that created strictly to be used in some way to reveal that the Arturo is Season 2-3 was the evil double or what? The disease plotline was never fully utilized, how come, Fox intervene? Or was it merely forshadowing for JRD's departure.

Tracy Torme: have to answer door - no i opened that can of worms because we knew fox wanted him off the show originally it was my way of greasing those wheels just in case we had to replace him with... oh lets see... a girl from mtv that cant act?

jerry_o_who: LOL.

jerry_o_who: As a fledgling writer it's been an honor to speak with you. Adios!

Tracy Torme: good luck to you spread the truth if you like. take care.

Well, there you have it. His new show's sound pretty cool. They almost make me want him to move away from Doomsday and spend most his time developing these new projects. The space one in particular. The sliders talks with Robert K. Weiss don't tell us anything that we didn't know before hand. But, at least Weiss is still talking about it, spreading the word. Mr. Torme was extremely gracious and lengthy in the interview, from what I can gather he's a pretty nice guy.

You've heard it from the SLIDERS-God...

Granted I steared clear of the movie topic, but we had a fairly long conversation and he was interested enough to ask me to email him.

Of course, that was a while back and wasn't all Sliders related. He probabky won't remember me now.

Sarah.

If true, then Weiss film way overblown!

I look at the following passage from this chat,

jerry_o_who: Before I go, any truth to Mr. weiss's Sliders film claim?

Ok, so if this chat is true, then Tracy IS interested in doing the movie, but it seems that Weiss' push to get a movie going is just some kind of a what-if idea. A, do you think we could do that? thing. Apparently, Weiss isn't even doing ANYTHING at all with it.

I say again, if this chat is real and Torme is telling the truth, then R.K. Weiss isn't really working on a Sliders movie after all, he's just thinking about doing it. That is bad news I think, because there isn't any kind of ongoing effort at all (which is what I've thought was the case, since Weiss hasn't said ANYTHING in public about it since December 1999).

If this is not true, then who knows

Overblown?

Tracy is either low balling this on purpose, or is just heavily out of the loop. First, we have the chat I assume Tracy is referring to:

http://www.slidersweb.net/ssn/weiss.html

None of that sounds like "What if-ing" or something that *someone else* "vamped"...but it depends on how liberally you use the term. Again, people generally read what they want to hear.

However, this is not the only thing out there. If this was just a game of "What if?" from one conversation that has been blown out of proportion...then how does one explain the later RK Weiss meeting with Jerry O'Connell about a movie? (and all the news bites Jerry gave afterward about them knowing "what it would take" to get him). How about the subsequent meetings with Cleavant Derricks that he has mentioned? Cleavant (the only one we regularly have contact with) is *not* treating this like some game of day dreaming that's been blown up without justification. However, we've always known that it's basically just in the planning stages...no movie is really "in production" until a studio gives a green light or a fast track. We know that hasn't happened.

So once more, people just read what they want to hear. We know for a fact this movie idea has gone beyond what Torme' characterized here:

"Tracy Torme: i was with bob last weekend we talked about it briefly some one had once asked him if hed be interested in doing a film (someone on the net) he said sure thats interesting and they vamped about it a little a what if conversation..."

The only question left is why Torme' said that (whether it be part of a down playing or just the fact that Torme' really doesn't know).
