Why I Love "As Time Goes By"

Yep, I'm guilty of starting a new post for a reply, but the original message is to far in the past. So, magicstorm:

I just watched this episode again last night before going to bed. Dumb, dumb, dumb. I was awake a half hour just thinking about it. This episode is great for lots of reasons-

1)It has that day in the life feel. Four worlds in one episode, including two concepts I loved: New Spain and Backwards World.

2)Daelin Richards goes a long way in explaining Quinn's obliviousness towards Wade in Season 1. Quinn has it so bad for this girl that he's willing to grab ANY double of her and take her along. It makes you wonder who is truly #1 in Quinn's heart.

3)Quinn likely destroys an entire dimension by altering its timeline. His response: "Wow." Since this episode is technically the season finale, it shows us the beginning of Quinn's transformation from wonderful guy to callous son of a... (Remember: not only did Fox air it last in the original run but aired it again the hour before debuting Season Three's "Rules of the Game.")

A tremendous episode that spins off so many possibilities. This is what the show is all about.

And Charlie gets shot! (Sorry, SouthernSlider, couldn't resist! ;) )

Shame, shame, shame.

You said that last statement as if you enjoyed it!

That's okay. I understand I am in a great minority of Charlie/Colin lovers. I don't mind. That means more of him for me. I can write about him to my heart's content, and put him in a great role.

And I agree with you. As Time Goes By was a great ep <except for Charlie getting shot>. I think I need to explore Daelin and Quinn in a fanfic sometime. Might be interesting.

What I loved about it...

I loved it's randomness. The way they made a story not revolving around Time's Arrow, yet putting that in for an extra touch was brilliant. I'm sure Seinfeld got the idea from this ep when he made his backwards episode.

Love. True love. What is true love?

It's a good eppy, but Quinn was never in love with Wade and JOC checked out of the role way too early.

Too bad Torme didn't last longer.

Groovy post.

SS, don't you own the Charlie clone?

LOL

This episode to me is the greatest episode next to the premire episode. It should be on DVD!

That episode on fox

That episode was the only episode to only air once on fox....trust me i know. rules of te game and a re-run of the x-files was at 9 pm and then the next week was double cross with a re-run again and then the next week we see ETAT with the first episode of the x-files one of three that where shown at that time to i guess atract viewers to their new show millenium. and by the way ETAT was the highest rated episode in sliders history with a 7.2/14 share in rating. I do belive if they aried the first episode of sliders and x-files togther sliders would still be on fox or at least be one for another season.

Are you sure?

My copy of "As Time Goes By" has "Rules of the Game" following it. It even has a little intro by JOC and it's recorded straight from Fox.

I admit, I didn't recall seeing "As Time Goes By" the night I first saw "Rules of the Game", but I figured the tape didn't lie.

Very interesting....

You're right. I re-watched the tape and it was a seamless edit between the two shows. I got fooled.

Yep...reason for Fox decision

There was a reason why Fox only aired "As Time Goes By" once...it goes along with the reason they waited until the dead of summer to air it for the first time. Fox absolutely hated "As Time Goes By". The reason? Fox Executives didn't understand the episode...it confused them.

"As Time Goes By" was actually supposed to air very early in season two, but Fox kept holding the episode back...not even saying when they were going to air it (mainly because they didn't want to air it...but they felt stuck with it). Ironically, all of this caused problems with the production of "Greatfellas" as well.

"Greatfellas" was filmed in March of 1996 just as Sliders season two was beginning. As such, they were just finding out the scheduling...and just becoming aware of the "As Time Goes By" airing problem ("As Time Goes By" being filmed in January of 1996 - very much "in the can").

You see, the female con artist Quinn becomes involved with in "Greatfellas" was supposed to be a double of Daelin (and her boyfriend partner was supposed to be a double of the guy she got involved with on every world). Because of this, Quinn was supposed to care alot more for the girl...the basis for the relationship being "As Time Goes By". But, as "Greatfellas" was filming...they had no idea when "As Time Goes By" would air.

This left a few options. One would be to gamble and film as is...which wasn't an attractive option given what happened in season one due to Fox schedule shuffling. The second option would be to introduce the reasons for Quinn/Daelin again in "Greatfellas"...but that would take up story time needed for other areas (not to mention the fact that it would be redundant since the explanation would eventually air). That left the third option and the one they went with...scrap the whole thing and just make the con artists generic characters (which would be cost effective as well - cheaper actors).

It's one of the lesser known results of Fox tampering, but it's still as tragic in my mind. Daelin was meant to be a recurring character...but due to Fox holding "As Time Goes By" hostage, she was just a one episode wonder.
