Hot Glory Hole Action!! :-P (WSWBR)

Mmmmmm, you've got to try these new glory hole donut holes at Donut God! :-P~~~~~~~~~~~

Anyway, now that all of you are here, I have a Sliders question!

We've all ranked which seasons we liked best a million times before, so let's do something a little different.

Which group of Sliders do you think had the roughest time? The most adversity to overcome, the tightest jams to get out of, etc.

Here are my rankings.

1) Quinn, Remmy, Maggie, (+ -)Colin. With or without Colin, this was the physically fittest bunch and boy did they need to be! If it wasn't runins with the Kromaggs it was religious nuts, techno nuts, or Nazi nuts! Unlike the original bunch, who brought a lot of their drama on themselves, this group didn't need to go looking for trouble to get it. Sometimes just arriving on a world put them in mortal danger. Personally, I think this group had the most to overcome.

2) Quinn, Remmy, Arturo, Wade. Although I think they would have gotten their asses handed to them if they'd had any runins with the New Kromaggs or even some of the other mean worlds, this group did suffer through and survive their share of nasty worlds and experiences. The fact that they brought much of their adversity on themselves by sticking their nose in where it didn't belong drops them down a notch. But I don't see the S5 bunch surviving on Fever world so that counts for something.

3) Quinn, Remmy, Maggie, Wade. They weren't together long, but every world they arrived at while they were together was a NIGHTMARE! It was a Jimmy Buffet song ("Vampires, Mummys, and the Holy Ghost") every time they stepped out of the vortex. If they had been together longer and seen more worlds they might be ranked 2 but the relatively fewer number of adventures drops them down a notch in my book.

4) Remmy, Maggie, Mallory, Diana. Other than a couple runins with the Maggs their lives were never really in danger. They had interesting experiences, to be sure, but they didn't have to fight for mere survival on a weekly basis.

5) Quinn and Maggie. Who knows? Maybe someone will flesh this out in fan fic some day.

So that's how I see what these various groups had to endure. Your thoughts?

All Slider Survival team:

Combat: S4 Quinn, Maggie, S4 Remmy, Professor Arturo. The first three are obvious, and I picked Arturo because he would make the best field general. This group would dominate.

Exploration: S1-2 Quinn, Arturo, Diana, Colin. The first three know Sliding technology well and the 4th, Colin, might be the smartest of them all. All four of them are intelligent and curious, and they can even take care of themselves a little bit if things get violent. I don't see anything this team couldn't discover or figure out.

Ready of Anything: S1-2 Quinn, Arturo, Colin, Maggie. They can fight as well as most combinations but there is a lot of brain power here too. They can blend in or get in your face. They can solve any Sliding problem they have the tools to fix. This might be the strongest all around group, it is certainly the most flexible.

And finally, the group I think would be the most fun to hang out with if the characters were real people: Arturo, Wade, Remmy, Mallory. Amusing, charming, not too scary intelligent, light hearted, and interesting.

These are my picks, anyway. :-P

You make a good case...

...for BT to be utterly destroyed!!

...for your particular choices but what fun would it be if I agreed with every one of them?

Call me a traditionalist if you must, but I'm going to choose the original fab four: Quinn, Remmy, Wade and Arturo as the group that had the roughest time. Some points in their favor. You state that they often get themselves in trouble and this is true. However, this is but one symptom of what I believe to be the factor that made theirs the roughest time sliding: they had no veterans. They were all just starting out and had no idea how to behave, what they could do or who they could trust.

This group also had the least internal cohesion. True, Maggie caused a lot of discord when she originally arrived, but in that group and succeeding ones each slider knew they were in it for the long haul; there were no constant "left behind" scenarios where one of the group decides they might want to stay. Going through rough times doesn't always mean reacting to external factors, sometimes it means weathering in-fighting as well.

Also, I think this group, at least in the first two seasons, had more complex problems. Obviously this was due to better writing, but I think "escape from a Kromagg prison", no matter how hard it is, is pretty straight-forward; the S1 and S2 sliders often had to navigate some murky socio-political situations. Also, this group is the only crew not to have the ability to return to worlds they'd visited: a setback that made any threat to making the slide that much more daunting.

2. Again, I'm placing internal problems ahead of external ones to name the late S3 crew: Quinn, Maggie, Wade and Remmy as the second most harried sliding group. These sliders had just lost their first comrade and instead of weathering it stoically as later groups would (for better or worse), this crew nearly tore itself apart. Maggie antagonized Wade so heavily that she practically ceased functioning as a useful member of the group and Quinn descended fully into Action Quinn mode, making his intellect practically irrelevant. Rembrandt wouldn't be integral until later seasons and Maggie didn't inspire much confidence in any slider other than Quinn. All in all, I think any serious threat (socio-political or military) would have thrown these guys for a loop. It's a good thing they only had to deal with bad movie rip-offs.

3. OK, now I must recognize the S4 crew for the same reasons that you gave them number one. Although I will make two comments. One, the very fact that this group is so tight-knit and capable makes their tour of duty that much more easy to handle. There was little to no internal dissent and everybody seemed to compliment each other well in terms of what they could do and what they were good at. Which brings me to point two, that I believe Quinn, Maggie and Rembrandt (before they linked up with Colin) would have been well nigh unstoppable in any sort of situation, had they not continually poked their nose in where it didn't belong. Even on "Common Ground" world their problem was of their own making (or it possibly could have been avoided if they'd done something differently).

4. The S5 crew. Don't know much about them, sorry. Except that with Diana as their scientist and Mallory with not many useful skills it seems like this is the functionally poorest group. It's a good thing they didn't run into any major threats.

Since I agree with your awards, let me throw in a few of my own:

Best Group to Handle a Socio-Political Situation: Pre-PTSS S2 Arturo, S4 Quinn, S4 Maggie, S5 Rembrandt. These guys are cool enough to navigate whatever political machinations they inadvertantly end up in.

Best Team of Sliders From Minor Characters: Bennish (natch), Commander Wade Welles, Gomez Calhoun and Daelin Richards. Bennish would fill the scientist role nicely, Comm. Wade could kick butt and would provide steady leadership and Gomez and Daelin seem like they could adapt well to any situation.

Worst Group to Handle Any Situation: S1 Quinn, S3 Arturo, S3 Maggie, Mallory. I think these guys could get wiped out on a world where people worship Care Bears.

Great discussion topic, SL! It's a very pleasant surprise to have you post two interesting threads in one day.

The Glory Hole

Starring Kari Wuhrer naturally

Despite only 9 misadventures, I have to give the roughest ride to:

1. Quinn, Maggie, Wade, Rembrandt. Not only is the group torn apart by dissension and still reeling from the shock of losing Arturo, but they are up against exceedingly bizarre circumstances. Even if Quinn was on his best game, it would do him no good. How do you use logic to fight magic snakes, zombies, and most incredulous of them all, vampires?

2. Quinn, Arturo, Wade, Rembrandt. As TM said, they're not psychologically ready for what's to come. They have the skills, but they're winging it. And many of their difficulties went beyond a) running away or b) search and destroy.

3. Quinn, Rembrandt, Maggie, +/- Colin. The worlds they encountered were indeed dangerous, but strangely uniform. There wasn't much need to diversify the gameplan, and all were in prime sliding shape. The group was actually stronger pre-Colin, as Quinn was more energized and focused.

4. Rembrandt, Maggie, Mallory, and Diana. They couldn't escape from a paper bag without help. Fortunately their adventures were considerably scaled down. Throw them into any other season, and they're toast.

SL4ever, you also mentioned a Quinn/Maggie scenario. I suspect the two of them alone would have the best fit for sliding. A) Less people to inadvertantly get into trouble. B) Brains and brawn are a good combo. There are a few fanfics devoted to their story, the most comprehensive being a novel sized adventure by Jason Gaston. You can find it at his Slightly Warped Slider Site under his "serious works." I haven't read it yet, so I can't give you any details.

My Dream Team? The Original 4 naturally. Of the 4 replacements, only Maggie and Mallory are of interest to me.
Although I once dreamed I was watching a season 4 that starred Quinn, Colin, Maggie and Arturo...and it was surprisingly interesting. Take that with as many grains of salt as it deserves.

Quinn and Maggie Fan fic

Someone did write a fan fic about Quinn and Maggie's adventures between S3 and S4. Jason Gaston wrote "I Know Where You Slid Last Summer." It's on his sliders fan fic site. Here's the link:

Just to let you know, it's a really long story. Well-written, though. It's a good read.
