[All right, now that I've had a chance to bitch for a while about not getting attention, ;-) I'm writing the second part to the prologue of my spinoff. Here's the first part:

Prologue

Dr. Terrence Bergman used to be the happiest psychiatric doctor that you ever did see. His wife was Dr. Clair Bergman, a medical doctor with the salary of a Microsoft employee. Together, they had a single daughter, Natalie. With a double income coming from two doctors, the Bergmans were quite wealthy too. Unfortunately, all their lives would change in 1994, on Terrence's and Clair's 8th anniversary, no less. One of Terrence's deranged ex-patients broke into the house, holding the ladies hostage. Just when Terrence thought he convinced the man to leave, he shot and killed Clair and Natalie, as well as critically wounding Terrence. He finished it off by committing suicide.

It's been four years since Ryan Simms slid with four others onto the world where he lives now. At some point soon after, he met a psychiatrist and told him about all this. (Like the bookends in Post Traumatic Slide Syndrome... only no one showed up at the end.) The psychiatrist had Ryan committed to a mental hospital in San Francisco. As it turns out, it doesn't take much to get sent to a nut-house on this world. They're more populated than prisons.

In 1996, jaded, embittered, lonely psychiatrist Dr. Terrence Bergman met Ryan Simms for the first time. Ryan was clearly not insane in Dr. Bergman's opinion, but other doctors maintained that he was. Against Dr. Bergman's wishes, Ryan was given electro-shock therapy. Eventually, Ryan's "therapy" made him more insane than any delusions about sliding. Terrence continued to work with Ryan, hoping one day that the people running the sanitarium would just let him go. Ryan, however, is no longer in any mental condition to go anywhere.

Luckily for both Terrence and Ryan, soon they'll get the chance to change both their lives forever.
