Heated
Sliders Debate!
Date: 05/29/2000
From: Brand_S
Yeah, this is in response to Mychand's post above. I figured, how can
I refuse a nice young lady like her in her request? After all, she was
actually brave enough to contribute to the Gallery!
I myself am just waiting until my hair grows out more; I'm in a "transitional
period" right now! I'd have a good goatee and much longer hair
goin', but I swear, whenever I WANT it to do something, my hair always
comes to a complete stop! It's no fair!
Anyhow, here's the heated debate!
Which of these two would you rather have had:
1) All five seasons of Sliders as we know it.
2) Tracy Tormé having complete control for all three seasons,
the original cast staying put, and Tormé intentionally ending
the show's run at the end of the third season. The final episode: Heat
of the Moment.
So, what'll it be? Five seasons or three EXCEPTIONAL seasons?
Aw'right, so it's not that heated. I'm just trying to do something
nice here! Think of me as a good samaritan!
S
PS: QBall79, you need to tell Tormé just how sorry we all are
that his creation got Pecked. Should we do something to show him, like
a mass e-mail or something? By the way, you're still here, right?
PPS: This somehow reminds me of those SNL skits where Chris Farley,
George Wendt, Mike Myers, John Goodman, and that other guy were fat
mustachioed Polish-sausage-eating fans of Chicago's sports teams. You
know, "da Bearss" and "da Bullss." What would be
more of an even match? Coach Ditka vs Godzilla or Michael Jordan vs
King Kong?
This one's going over everyone's head, isn't it?

1) Would be bad, but we would have more seasons.
2) Good but we would be stuck with 3 seasons, and no movie.

I don't know
1) We have more seasons.
2) We have three Tormé seasons. We wouldn't of had to see Peck
mess with it. The Professor would have stayed for the rest of the season.
We still wouldn't of had a series finale that finishes every thing off,
but it would have been better than The Seer.
I the think number 2 would have been better.

I'm sure there would've have been numerous uncountable merits if we
had Torme in control for 3 seasons but hvaing these uneven 5 seasons
ranging from greatness to mediocrity to even below sometimes has given
us alot to talk about. Theres been debates on which season was better,
which cast is better and i think stuff like that is what the bboard
is intended to be used for. It keeps it going. Even though the show
is over with all these different casts we can always find something
to critique and debate.
I'm going with the show the way it is. The firings, quitings, and all
the behind scenes controversies that ocurred pretty soon after Torme's
power was lessened, resulted in a very interesting television history.
For better or for worse somwhere our show will have it's claim to fame
as having the most cast changes in a science fiction T.V. Series(perhaps
even beating Dr. Who-but, I doubt it)

Ah,
but what you fail to consider is...

If Torme and Weiss had been in control for the entire run with little
intervention from FOX. This would have had some interesting results.
1) Production would have remained in Vancouver - much better for the
'look and feel' of the show. 2) JRD would have stayed & no Kari
- much better for the acting. 3) None of the 3rd season sh!t with the
movie ripoffs and other crap - can you imagine an S3 without Electric
Twister Acid Test? 4) Shows shown in order.
What's left out of your poll is the very real possibility that the
resulting show would have had sufficient ratings to still be on today!
FOX's Friday night lineup hasn't exactly been tearin' up the ratings
since the jump to SCI FI.
So while its tempting to go for the five seasons we had and the possibility
of a movie, I'll go with option #1. I honestly think there wouldn't
have been a need for Torme to end the show after 3 seasons if he had
been in control instead of FOX.

3 good seasons are better than 2 good seasons, 2 horrible seasons that
I can't bring myself to watch and one pretty good season.
So, for me, I only have 2 and a half good seasons that I can watch.
So 3 really good seasons would be way better.

Thanks Brand S! :o)
Okay, my choice. I think I would rather have three good seasons with
the original cast. I think mostly because of what happened to the main
characters. Maybe if that part of it had been handled differently, my
opinion would be different. What happened to Wade and the Professor
ruined it for me.

Would three Torme seasons include a full run? If they did then I'm totally
for it. However, I didn't get online until Feb of 99 and I think that
rerun hell was fired up, so I would never have found my way here. Not
that it would matter to most. In the end, three full seasons of Torme.
I remember da Bears--hmmm. Does that make me old? ;-D

More
seasons equals more episodes
Date: 05/29/2000
From: Yankeeblue
This is a good topic to talk about. I would have loved to have 3 great
seasons is Tracy Torme were still calling the shots. But let's not forget
that the first 2 seasons were each only half a season of 9 and 13 episodes
respectively. Season 3 was Fox's only full season which would have totaled
an overall 44 episodes. Reruning these eps on the Sci-Fi Channel on
a Monday to Friday schedule would take a mere 9 weeks and eventually
force the network to move it on its schedule in favor of newer or more
recent shows they would eventually add to the schedule after Sliders
having been in a certain time slot so often. So I would prefer if there
were more seasons since very few shows in the Sci-Fi genre can last
for 5 seasons these days.
As for the man vs. monster competition, anybody remember the giant
Charles Barkley/Godzilla basketball game in that sneaker commercial.
Definitely wouldn't want to be there to be crushed by all the rubble
they spilled all over that city (if it still exists)!

And the answer is... the five seasons that we got.
There's really no contest. For the characters we got to know outside
of the originals (the good ones, anyway), the twists that came with
time, and the good episodes that we had that had nothing to do with
the first three seasons or Torme... it's a choice between having that
or ending it on another cliffhanger two years earlier?
I'll take what we got.
