Sliders
filming in Alhambra, CA!!!
Date: 1/29/99
From: danooh
I work over in Alhambra, CA at the old C.F. Braun engineering company
campus. They were filming Sliders today!!! Saw Cleavant Derricks (I
waved hello and he waved back with a hello and a big smile) and saw
Kari Wuhrer (who is FAR PRETTIER in person!!!). They had chairs for
the new castmembers, but did not know who they were so not sure if I
saw them or not. The "world" was at some sort of mental facility
with a bunch of wacky people walking around with wild clothes. One scene
I saw them filming was two actors (possibly new cast members) coming
out of the wormhole. The second scene was with Rembrandt and Maggie
sitting around with some other people drinking something and strategizing
about their next move. One of the signs on the buildings said "Neural"
something. It was pretty funny to see the extras bouncing around in
the background as background "noise" for the scene. According
to the schedule that I saw, filming was taking place today with packing
up on Monday. They may be filming over the weekend, but no information
for information other than Friday and Monday was provided. Asked what
episode they were filming, but none of the crew was very forthcoming
with information. Based on the infinite amount of repeats, the shooting
today could very well have been for season 4, but could be season 5.

Season
5 cast

From: Arturo2000
Were the other people you saw with Cleavant and Kari a young male resembling
Quinn and an african-american woman? If it was, these are the new cast
members Robert Floyd and Tembe Locke. Floyd plays "Mallory",
a combo of Quinn and Colin. Locke plays Diana Davis, a scientist working
on sliding who decides to join Rembrandt, Maggie, and Mallory throughout
the 5th season.

That
was NOT the forth season...

They finished the 4th season nearly a year ago. What you saw was the
fifth season in production

OK,
so call me Doubting Thomas, but...

...how exactly did you see "two actors...coming out of the wormhole"
since the wormhole is, of course, computer generated. Did it just look
like that was what they were doing, did the dialogue indicate it or
was there some other cause? Also, how did you get so close as to see
all of these things? I guess I might be just jealous because I live
where nothing is ever filmed (try filming something in West Virginia)
or it might be just because I'm a stickler for details, but it would
be nice if you would set my mind to rest. If it's authentic, no harm
done right?

Yes, the actors you described are who I saw coming out of the wormhole.
Thanks for the details on who is who. Not much data out there yet...Unless
I am just not persistent enough...

Yes, the vortex scene was pretty hokey. The camera was facing a brick
building and they jumped off of a 6" high platform from the right,
landed so perfectly, turned left and smiled at the camera. It was not
the typical crash land scenario. It was just odd because only those
two jumped out of the vortex. In the background, a crewmember was moving
this pile of branches from one place to another in two piles. After
about two takes, they decided to turn on the windmachine. They had some
very large mylar type banners that they used to reflect the high power
lights they had. I could not hear anything in the way of dialogue and
Kari and Cleavant were not near the set.
The "campfire" scene (as I describe to my friends) had the
two new sliders sitting around the campfire after Rembrandt and Maggie
left.
I will post a scan of the building notice in PDF on Monday for all
to see. Will do this on my website and provide the URL once posted.
Thanks for the feedback and the tips to season 5!!!

How
exciting!!!!

You actually got to see Remmy in person, and he waved. I bet he's a
great guy. The only TV show I saw being filmed was ET. They were doing
a piece on The Blob which was filmed where I live. I was on the show
as they reinacted the part of the film where the people ran screaming
out of the Colonial Theatre (I worked there at the time). But your sighting
is much more exciting. You'll have to post when they air the show that
you saw filming. Did you get any pictures?

Ratz!!!
No pictures!!!

Had my facilities manager posted the notice from the building (like
he usually does), I would have had advance warning to bring a camera.
Could have gotten some nice shots too! My only clue to filming was when
I saw the sign for "Slide" in the typical handwritten, black
ink and on pink construction paper. They were filming where the typically
film on campus. Episodes of The Profiler and an HBO telefilm about a
(real?) sports agent were filmed there.

TemporalFlux's comment:
I have verified that this information as legitimate.
This was the second day of filming for "Map of the Mind" (Friday,
January 29, 1999) and consisted of all the external shots of the mental
institute at the beginning of the episode (the slide in, the tea party,
the round up of mental patients with the tear gas, etc). The descriptions
he gives are also accurate (the platform he mentions in one of the replies
was called the "Vortex Ramp" by the crew).
To add the "rest of the story" to his,
they did no filming over the weekend. Sliders production never filmed
on the weekend and they were back on the Universal backlot that Monday.
Unfortunately, the guy never gave the follow
up post he mentioned with the scan of the notice.
