I rarely go off topic on this board, but I thought I would share with
you my thoughts on the so called summer smash, Frequency. I was unable
to see it when it was at the local cinema, so I saw it at a special
free screening last weekend at my public library. Be warned ===>
Spoilers ahead! ;-)
Once again we have a movie dealing with teleportation. This time it
is in the form of a ham radio. The radio in this film is able to change
its location and time as it appears to be present both in 1969 and 1999.
It is because of this that the main character John is able to communicate
with his dead father.
First of all, if you're going to do a movie dealing with teleportation,
you should make it realistic. While the shots of a glowing night sky
were a good indicator that the radio was using a form of astral projection
to get around, the writers do a poor job of explaining just how the
radio is able to do this.
Another element of the movie that I didn't quite understand was the
message that suddenly appeared on Jon's desk. It had no connection with
the radio, which was the focus of the entire film, and it seemed out
of place. Likewise, the wallet mysteriously appearing in the floorboard
was a bit convenient.
Near the end of the movie we have an unexpected twist - John seems
to have developed a form of early dementia, as he starts remembering
different things in the past that conflict with what he thought he experienced.
By this time I was lost and wondering what this movie was even about.
I kept telling myself that it would all come back to the ham radio at
the end, but it didn't. Later we find out that John's father never really
died at all, as he jumps in to save his son from the murderer, who at
one point begins losing body parts for no explainable reason.
I think the ending, revealing that John's misadventures with a teleporting
radio and his dead father was all a twisted, demented episode coming
from his own mind, was a cop out. It does explain a lot about the strange
sequence of events that preceded the revelation, but walking out of
the library, I felt I was robbed of 2 hours.
So in summation, don't waste your time with this one. It's not worth
your time or money.
