If there's one thing Sliders' suffers no shortage of, it's great ideas.
The execution may be lacking, but the concept is incredible.
There are dozens of episodes worthy of this award, but I can only
pick one. And despite the presence of some phenominally successful
episodes, I keep drifting back to one that could have been better.
My pick for Best Concept is:
World Killer
By Marc Scott Zicree
I nearly salivated when I saw the description for this episode at
Sci-Fi. Not only does it feature a disturbing opening world where
Quinn's double is the last man on earth, but he's also responsible
for it. It's a beautiful "what if" scenario, except instead
of looking to the historical past, it looks back to "the Pilot"
itself and asks what would have happened had Quinn really jacked up
the power. In addition, an opportunity is set-up for both social satire
and commentary with the overpopulation world created by Quinn's mistake.
Third, it's a perfect character development episode at this point
in time because our Quinn is growing increasingly reckless and remorseless.
This double could have been a major wake-up call.
It's combination of continuity, innovative application of the technology
(slidewave), character and social satire/commentary could have been
unmatched. It just wasn't executed to its full potential, the major
weakness being the delivery of Overpopulation Earth. But conceptually,
this was a beaut and could have been the biggest episode since it
debuted in March of '95.
Your picks (and I suspect it will be very varied)?
