Are
you a child of the 80's? (NSR)
Date: 04/20/2000
From: Informant
I found this at my Buffy board, so I figured I'd post it here. I'll
put a star next to the things that match me. Remember, I'm not like
an 80's-ologist. I don't remember everything!
********************************************************
You know you were an 80's kid if:
*You know what "Sike" means.
*You know the profound meaning of "Wax On Wax Off".
*You know that another name for a keyboard is a "Synthesizer".
*You can name at least half of the members of the BRAT Pack.
You know who Tina Yothers is.
You wanted to be a Goonie.
You know who Max Headroom is.
*You ever wore Fluorescent, neon clothing.
*You could breakdance, or wished that you could.
You wanted to dress like the Hulk at Halloween.
You believed that "By the Power of Greyskull," you
HAD the POWER.
*Partying "like it's 1999" seemed sooo far away.
*You thought that Transformers were more than meets
the eye.
You wanted to be on StarSearch.
*You remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell
off.
You have worn a Banana Clip, or knew someone who did.
You owned a doll with "Xavier Roberts"
signed on its butt, or knew someone who did.
*You knew what Willis was "talkin' 'bout".
*You HAD to have your MTV.
*You hold a special place in your heart for "Back to the Future"
*You know where to go if you "wanna go where
everybody knows your name."
You thought Molly Ringwald was REALLY cool.
*You actually thought "Dirty Dancing" was a REALLY
good movie.
**You have heard of "Garbage Pail Kids".
*Punks actually "shocked" people
*You knew "The Artist", when he was humbly called
"Prince".
You actually saw Ted Danson as the MacDaddy he played "Sam"
to be.
*You remember when ATARI was a state of the art video game.
*You own any cassettes.
You were led to believe that in the year
2000 we'd all be living on the moon.
You remember and/or owned any of the CareBear glass collections from
Pizza Hut, Or any other stupid collection of glass they came out with.
*Poltergeist freaked you out.
You carried your lunch to school in a Gremlins or an ET lunchbox.
You have ever pondered why Smurfette was the ONLY
female smurf.
You wore biker shorts underneath a short skirt and
felt stylish, or know someone who did.
*You ever had a Swatch Watch, or three.
You had a crush on one of the Corey's (Haim or
Feldman).
You had a crush on Bo Derek or Heather Locklear.
*You remember when Saturday Night Live was funny.
You had Wonder Woman or Superman underoos.
*You know what a "Whammee" is.
You had a crush on Jon BonJovi, or knew someone who did.
You thought eating Reeses Pieces would attract your own Alien.
Your name is Jennifer or Jason.
You have ever called 867-5309. You know
the song...
You had a poster of Rob Lowe, Kirk Cameron, or Michael J. Fox on your
wall.
*You held the top score on PacMan.
You had MALL Hair.
You owned a T-Shirt that said, "I shot J.R." or know someone
who did.
IF you can identify with at least half of
this list then you, my friend, are a child of the 80's.
***********************************************************
The sad thing to me is... are there really people who DON'T remember
this stuff?
Okay, I never wanted to be a Goonie... but I remember them
I know what the Greyskull is, but was never that into it.
Watched Star Search.
Am now starting to wonder why Smurfette was the only female.
I really like Reeses Pieces.
Man... anyone else feel REALLY old right now?

Don't think I'm a child of the 80s although I did HAVE a child in the
80s .
The things on that list I can identify:
another name for keyboard is synthesizer
know who Tina Yother is
know who Max Headroom is
wore fluorescent, neon clothing (though usually I put it on my baby
son, poor kid, he didn't have a choice in the matter)
partying "like its 1999" seemed soooo far away
you remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off
(also when he still looked like a black man)
you hold a special place in your heart for "Back to the Future"
you know where to go if you "wanna go where everybody knows your
name"
you have heard of Garbage Pail Kids
punks actually "shocked" people
you knew "The Artist" when he was humbly called "Prince"
you remeber when ATARI was a state of the art video game
you own any cassettes
you remember the CareBear glass collections from Pizza Hut
Poltergeist freaked you out
you know someone who wore biker shorts underneath a short skirt
you remember when Saturday Night Live was funny (but that was in the
1970s not the 1980s)
Not sure, is that half??
I can also remember a day before cable TV was available, when there
were only 5 stations on TV == ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and Independent, with
the Independent showing local baseball games and sitcom reruns. I can
remember the day MTV premiered (with the astronaut and the flag) and
I can remember when VCR's were first introduced and that they cost OVER
$1000 to buy (in 1980 dollars, probably would be twice that in year
2000 dollars), and you had to decide whether you wanted BETA or VHS
format. That means I can remember when the only ways to see a movie
is to go to the theatres, or to sit down at the time ABC/NBC/CBS decided
to show the movie and watch it then (remember, no tapes, no VCR's????)
And I can remember when Captain Kirk's Star Trek was the ONLY Star Trek
series that existed and everyone was talking about getting a Star Trek
movie going, reuniting the original cast.

Now at 24 I look back at the 80's and smile, one of the greatest decades
of all time!

FASHION - Turn Up trousers and Sweat Shirts - 80's fashion, people
still wear Sweat Shirts sometimes but as for the turn ups let just try
and forget them.
GRANGE HILL - The school drama in London with Gonch and Ziggy and Zammo
the drugie and not forgeting the blonde birds Faye and Tina.
EASTENDERS - The best TV soap ever started in the 80's.
Hooligans - Football Hooligisum hit a High in th 80's, I cant remember
1 game when it dident kick off at my teams Home ground. Southend United
FC !!!! are by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. - ENGLISH
FOOTBALL IS THE MOST PLAYED SPORT IN THE WORLD WITH ALMOST EVERY COUNTRY
INVOLVED!
FILMS - Back to the Future and The Goonies were great. But dont forget
the last 2 Star Wars films and Terminator. And Dirty Dancing was GREAT!
theres just to many films to list, one films that I remember that is
a Great 80's example is the Breakfast Club!

Oh, I don't know if anyone's responded to this, but I remember Tine

Mall hair? What's that mean? I mean, I did go to the mall to get a
haircut once... and regretted it. The girl didn't even know how to taper!
I don't think it was in the 80's though, but I digress.

...of the children of the 80's, technically, I am one. A substantial
proportion of my childhood took place then, and of course I was victim
to almost all of the trends, despite the fact that I'm kind of borderline
(generation y).
I can still relate (not necessarily agree with, but identify) with
everysingle aspect of that list from first hand experience (not someone
who says they're into 80's stuff long after it occurred).
I am still deemed *Bony Joanie* at school by mostly everyone, including
the teachers (one of the garbage pail kids), and I still wear my old
wonderwoman pajama top every now and again. Oh, but does anyone else
remember shrinky dinks? And I'm insulted that the list failed to include
Shera <sp?> and Heman; everyone owned all the action figures and
bed sheets, right????
