Cleavant Derricks on S6: Earth 71999

Well folks, the cast of Sliders' sixth season has been interviewed on Earth 71999! The first in the series was with Cleavant Derricks — only appropriate, since he's the sole original cast member. Hope you enjoy it!

Press: Thanks so much for taking the time out to talk to us Cleavant.

Cleavant: No sweat. Anything for the fans!

Press: Now before I ask you anything, let's make sure we both know that this is on the record, okay?

Cleavant: Haha, of course. Right.

Press: Great. Cleave, you've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. How's the season going so far? How does it compare to previous seasons?

Cleavant: It's better than it's ever been. The group has really had a chance to interact and gel more, and I think the producers have done a lot to bring the show back to its roots. I'm tellin' ya, it just gets better and better every year. The fans won't be disappointed.

Press: How did you feel when Sci-Fi initially announced the show wouldn't be back?

Cleavant: I was upset at first, but I reminded myself that Sliders has been here before. This show just refuses to die. Sci-Fi was great to bring us back for another season, and I hope it will be many more.

Press: I read on the Expert's newly reopened site that Jerry O'Connell is returning this season. Is there any truth to this rumor?

Cleavant: As of now, Jerry has signed on to do three episodes. If all goes well, he may do more than that, but with [his movie] "First Daughter" coming out next year, he's pretty busy with that.

Press: Nothing against Jerry, but his movies since Sliders have all been box-office failures. Will the success or failure of "First Daughter" have any bearing on whether or not he decides to return to Sliders on a permanent basis?

Cleavant: Jerry is a great guy, and so is his brother Charlie, but I don't feel qualified to comment on the status of his career. I'm gonna have to go with "no comment" on this one.

Press: Is that your final answer?

Cleavant: Hehehe, yeah. Final answer.

Press: Since you mentioned him, will Charlie be back this season too?

Cleavant: It's a possibility.

Press: What role will the Kromaggs play this season?

Cleavant: The Kromaggs will play a more limited role this season. I've only seen one script with Kromaggs in it.

Press: I guess we can all assume that Remmy survives the slide from Seer World, since you're doing the entire season...

Cleavant: You never know — I could be playing a double!

Press: Are you?

Cleavant: That's for me to know and you to find out!

Press: So — does Remmy make it home in the premiere?

Cleavant: I, uh, it's hard to say because there are so many earths out there that could be home. I will say that the episode ends with Rembrandt, Maggie, Mallory and Diana back together.

Press: What's your favorite episode of this season about?

Cleavant: Well, I can't give a detailed story, but a couple of my favorites are the Kromagg episode and one other I just heard about that I can't discuss just yet. There's a lot going on this season — some resolutions that I know the fans have been waiting for. One more question and I have to go.

Press: Discuss the rise of Libertarianism in America and trace its role and impact in legislation and foreign affairs, from the nation's founding to the present.

Cleavant: Goodnight.

Okay, you just about rock. I'm totally impressed with your witty reparte and linguistic dance. With you at the helm this should rival another phantom series we have yet to see.

Sadly, Mission to Mars was profitable.

But that's all I can think of. That's it.

Mission to Mars profitable?

At best it broke even.

It has been reported that the cost of making the film was between 60 and 80 million dollars:

http://www.movie-page.com/2000/MissionToMars.htm

And the last time it was on any box office total list (the weekend of April 21 - 23), the film had only cumulated $58,789,039. Mission to Mars has not appeared on a box office total list since then (but it is still showing in some theaters, so it continues to make at least minimal amounts). It's lack of appearance on subsequent lists, however, shows that it is not made more than one million since it's last report. It may make 60 million before it closes, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

You can find the box office totals Top 20 list at the bottom of that address listed above.

Of course, it's yet to hit video and those sales have not yet been calculated...but to my knowledge, the box office take is what determines if a movie is profitable. After all, video sales are not added in to determine the top grossing movies of all time...and it is those movies which are considered the successes of Hollywood.

Any profit to be made on M2M is through home video or product licensing (which home video hasn't occurred yet and can't be calculated)...but the studio won't see all of that money. Basically, M2M is not a complete flop (like Wild Wild West or Howard the Duck)...but it's not what will be called a success either.

And just to give a gauge...M2M doesn't even begin to compare to the other movies Jerry has starred in (which doesn't speak well):

M2M - grossed @ 60 million
Body Shots - grossed @ 750,000 (not even a million)
Scream 2 - grossed @ 101 million
Jerry Maguire - grossed @ 153 million

And let's not forget the stand alone role where he was the headliner star:

Joe's Apartment - grossed @ 5 million

Just what I heard.

From what I heard, M2M broke a small profit. Not big, mind you. Nothing more than $5 million, if that much. But I wouldn't be shocked if Buena Vista was projecting the film's cost a little low to make it seem like it was a success. They tend to do that. Just look at the line they're feeding the press about the cost of Dinosaur... when it's fairly well known WITHIN the industry that it cost about 70 million more than that.

Never trust Disney.

Of course, I'd be pleased to know M2M bombed. I've seen better sci-fi on Lexx... now THAT's an insult.

...guess I can't argue with THAT. :)

But really... I was, of course, mistaken either way. My apologies.

Well, M2M was a success on Earth71999...

But Jerry wasn't in it. The part of Phil was played by Matt Damon.
