I know what some of you are thinking: "Oh great, another political
post bashing Bush or Gore," or "Please, not another abortion
debate!"
While those issues are no less debatable now than they have been in
the past months and years, I wanted to tackle a different issue for
this first (and maybe last, depending on the response this gets) edition
of Politically Inept.
The issue I'm addressing here is in reference to our fascist government.
Ooh, did I just call the American government fascist? How dare I!
Well, it's true.
A month or two ago, a friend of mine came home to find one of his cars
had been stolen, not by thugs looking for spare parts or a phat ride,
but by our city police. According to a city ordinance, a person may
not keep an inoperable vehicle on his property without insuring and
registering it. If the car isn't insured or registered, the police are
allowed to come onto this person's PRIVATE PROPERTY, SEIZE THE VEHICLE
and impound it for a charge of $150 PER DAY to the owner.
I don't know the legal definition of a car (if there even is one),
but my friend's car was inoperable because he works on cars and was
using it for spare parts. I'm not even sure the thing had an engine.
Want to make a federal case out of it? Try this:
President Clinton, in his final months as our great ruler, traveled
the nation declaring pieces of land federal reserves, national parks,
and pretty much whatever the hell he felt like.
The problem? Much of this land was owned and inhabited by people who
farmed it to make their living. Our American government, which presides
"o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave," stripped
these people of their livelihood, their homes and their inheritances
in the name of conservation.
This isn't the only time our government has done this sort of thing.
Local and national authorities have been known to tear people's houses
down to make room for parking lots, furniture stores, shopping malls
and pretty much whatever they feel is in the community's best interest.
My friend's (the one with the car, remember?) grandfather was robbed
of his farm several years ago when Uncle Sam decided to put an interstate
highway through his land.
You may be asking, "How can they do this? Is this Democracy?"
Well, the answer is no. This is what is known as "eminent domain,"
and it means that the government can pretty much take whatever land
they see fit for whatever purpose they deem necessary.
I don't know if anyone has a defense or support for this, but I posted
this not only because it boils my blood, but because I wanted to read
your thoughts and hopefully spark a discussion about the wonderful government
that rules our great nation.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

P.S.- if anyone is wondering, I did see the John Stossel special last
week, but this is an issue that has been on my mind for a while.
