The
Most Osbcure Episode of Sliders
Date: 02/24/2001
From: Recall317
Throughout its 5 year run, Sliders produced some very memorable episodes.
Love them or hate them, who doesn't have a clear picture of the Pilot,
PTSS, the Breeder, and Requiem? But over 88 episodes or so, the production
team did manage to make some utterly forgettable episodes that many
of us can vaguely remember seeing let alone recall the name. Today,
I'd like to find out which episode is the least consequential of them.
What makes an episode obscure? It can't be too good or too bad. Either
one will garner it name recognition. It should more than likely have
no place in the show's continuity, so no one would miss if it suddenly
disappeared. Character development should be at a minimum. And lastly,
the story itself should be neither exciting nor intriguing. If you find
yourself having deep thoughts about life and the universe after the
episode concludes, then you're more likely to remember it later. And
that just won't do.
I believe every season has at least one candidate, but none so much
as Season 3. And that's where I make my selection-
The most obscure and inessential episode is...
State of the ART
No one ever talks about it. Most people do recall it had something
to do with robots. In terms of continuity, it's a throwaway episode.
Nothing learned at all. The action is plodding and predictable. There
are two vaguely interesting character developments: Arturo tells Wade
that privately he adores her, and Rembrandt tells Quinn he feels pretty
useless, summing up how the writers of the show felt about him during
S3.
So what are your choices? Time Again and World? Net Worth? So many
to choose from, if only you could remember them....

Man, I was just thinking about this topic yesterday! My choices were
"Net Worth" (despite the unforgettable Beret Wars) and "Map
of the Mind" (ecch...)
You're right about State of the ART, BTW. Any episode that a huge Sliders
fan can repeatedly hear discussed and not even realize he's never SEEN
it is Inconsequentiality City:

mediocre,
pointless episodes
Date: 02/24/2001
From: Slidemania
"The Fire Within" and "Dragonslide" are definitely
candidates from S3. Both were extremely mediocre, and kinda pointless.
Same goes for "Net Worth" and "Lipschitz Live!"
in S4, and "A Thousand Deaths" in S5. Even S2 had one such
episode...."Love Gods".

My choices would be State of the ART and The Fire Within also. But I
can't agree on Love Gods. Whether you liked it or not, you have to agree
it brought about the great debate on did he or didn't he. But, of course,
everyone knows he did. So it's not a very obscure ep.

My
picks:
Date: 02/24/2001
From: Terra_Pryme
Personally, I enjoyed "State of the A.R.T." I thought there
was good character development here. Yes, Remmy said he felt useless,
but then he devised a way for him and Quinn to escape for which he replies
"Who says you don't throw your weight around (for the team)".
And Wade blushes after realizing she kissed an android.
But you're right in saying that season 3 provides the most pointless
episodes. Among them would be those irritating B-movie knockoffs like
"Sole Survivors", "Slither", "Stoker",
and "This Slide of Paradise" (which ended this miserable season).
Another dishonor goes to the episode with the mole people, the title
of which I forgot, but will post when I remember.

And
others:

The episode I forgot the title to was "The Last of Eden".
And among the rest of the pointless episodes are "Easy Slider"
and "Heavy Metal". YUCK!!!

I like season 4 and roads taken is my best episode. State of the art
had robert englund(Freddy krueger) in. It had to be memorable for that.

The
Season 4 Problem
Date: 02/25/2001
From: Slider_Quinn21
I think that we all agree that Season 4 was Sliders at its worst.
And we all know what could've saved it. We all know that it was planned
and f*cked up by Peckinballs.
But, that would've made the whole season pointless(The mother of all
RESET buttons). So, in fact the unobscurity(not a word, but who cares?)
of Season 4 was its downfall...

The
Season 3 Problem!
Date: 02/25/2001
From: Terra_Pryme
I'd have to disagree on that, Quinn. Overall S3 was the worst in the
fact that it had great early episodes like "Double Cross"
and "The Guardian", but then descended to B-movie schlock
with the episodes I mentioned previously. This season was also hurt
with JRD's departure and Kari Wuhrer's Maggie made a bad first impression
when she replaced him, coming off as very bitchy.
Season 4 was better with the fact that Maggie's character development
was much better and there was more action with the Sliders' battles
against the Kromaggs. Contrary to an above post on this topic, I enjoyed
episodes like "Lipschitz Live" and "My Brother's Keeper".
The latter brought on a good issue (cloning), which has become reality
(for animals). The former was a LOL riot! With Sabrina Lloyd also gone
at this point, it was good to have at least some improvement for the
show. Unfortunately, they couldn't keep up the momentum for season 5
since JOC and COC eventually left as well and the writing suffered.

About
S4...
Date: 02/25/2001
From: Slidemania
Though not all of its episodes were "pointless", S4 was hardly
an improvement. It was bad enough that Sabrina was gone, but to replace
her with CHARLIE O'CONNELL of all people!
And Maggie's character change happened just a tad bit too quickly to
be believable. There should have been a somewhat longer transition for
her character to change.
But of course, Jerry's bland acting ruined the entire thing. By the
time Jerry and Charlie left the show, I was quite *RELIEVED* to see
them leave!
S5 had excellent writing and creative storylines...two components that
S4 severely lacked. With episodes like "California Reich",
"Data World", "The Chasm", "Prophets &
Loss", and "Virtual Slide", QUALITY is not the word I'd
use to describe Season 4.
No, I'd use the word "SHIT", instead.

because most of my picks have already been said three or four times.
I'd go with "The Fire Within," "State of The ART,"
"Data World," "Virtual Slide," "Slither,"
"Love Gods," "Lipschitty Live," and "Stoker."

Late
to the party
Date: 02/26/2001
From: Wrong_Arturo
OK, these have all been mentioned before, but I thought I'd throw my
two cents in anyway. Recall317, I was actually thinking of State of
the ART while reading the first post before scrolling down to see your
choice! :-) I think that's the best one to pick. Some people are picking
the episodes they think are the most horrible, but that's not the point.
State of the ART wasn't really good or really bad. It was just kind
of...there. It had some semi-neat ideas (the pink sky, the almost-romance
between Wade and an android) and some adequate acting from guest star
Englund and the rest of the usual suspects. (Note the word "adequate.")
It had a twist ending which I thought was cool at the time, and later
learned was ripped off of an old Star Trek episode. So it all kind of
balanced out. My reaction to this episode is: no reaction at all.
In contrast, The Fire Within, Dragonslide, The Chasm, and The Last
of Eden (and a few others) all make me break out in hives. I can't say
they're not memorable. I wish I could forget them.
I agree that Season 3 was much worse than Season 4. Yes, I hated most
of what they did with that season, but nothing compares to the movie-plagarism
plots and the introduction of Maggie in s3.
My two cents...

The
Fire Within
Date: 02/26/2001
From: Recall317
I didn't put this ep down because it's one of the few I haven't seen.
But I guess that fact alone, in of itself, is justification of its obscurity.
I watched a good deal of Season 3 in its original run, but I had never
HEARD of this episode. Never saw a commercial for it; didn't know it
even existed until this past November. And I STILL haven't seen it.
I mean, it's got a sliding flame for crying out loud! Why hadn't I heard
of it? Must be pretty damn obscure.
Final note on obscurity: S3 episodes are more likely to be obscure
not merely due to their plots, but because they didn't air much either.
For example, The Fire Within aired once on Fox. It was never repeated.
It did not play again until Sliders went into daily syndication at Sci-Fi.
Therefore, this ep has only aired a handful of times. In contrast, most
every episode from S4 (particularly the first half) has aired multiple
times. Like them or not, you are aware of them.
