Brad Linaweaver: Well, actually, before you showed up, we were talking about the big announcement. Maybe you'd like to make the announcement yourself. I already did it, but they'll pretend they're hearing it for the first time.

Tracy Tormé: We are coming back for 22 shows, and it's going to be on the Sci-Fi Channel and USA simultaneously.

(Cheering, applause)

Tracy: Now, the big question is what kind of show are we going to come back to. And there's quite a battle going on about that...yeah, I'd like to return the show to its original roots.

(Applause)

Tracy: If I told you some of the things that I heard before I left LA about what Universal is thinking right now, you'd be very frightened. So it's worse than you can imagine as far as who they think should come back to the show and what the direction should be and so there's going to be quite a little struggle about that over the next month or so, I think...I'm going to try everything I can to do about that. It's really, um, alot of it's about money, the budget won't be as high which in a way is kinda good because it's gonna force us to do more character shows. They're not going to be chased by giant snakes and vampires.

(Applause)

Brad: Well, is it true that the basic three, right, will still be the core...

Tracy: That's one of the things we're fighting about.

(Audience gasps, moans, and person says, "Please, dump Maggie!")

Tracy: Yeah! They say the basic three. I won't say anything about her except to say Meryl Streep is safe…

Brad: When will you know if victory is possible? In other words, at what time will the handwriting be on the wall?

Tracy: Well, there's a certain person who's, right now the studio would like to bring back to run the show who would be a terrible mistake. And they want to do it strictly for financial reasons. They have to pay him for another season and so they feel that they don't want to have to pay him to sit around and do nothing, or they don't want to pay him to go on another show with less episodes. So it's, that's all it comes down to now is, um, the person at the studio that had been protecting him all of last year has been fired. So there's nothing, uh, now that forces us to do this other than money…

***

What if it hadn't come down to money? What if David Peckinpah had been re-assigned, paving the way for John Rhys-Davies return? What if satire and character episodes returned? And CGI earthworms were relegated to B-movies where they belong?

In other words…what if Tracy Tormé had regained control of the show for Season Four?

T4: What is it?

About 10,000 words long at present.

OK, so maybe you've read the first episode and are wondering, what the hell happened? When did they get back the original timer? Why isn't Arturo dead? And where is Maggie?

All good questions. All have good answers. Well, answers anyway. The one question we had to ask ourselves every step of the way is: what would Tormé have done? He left no instructions. Some interviews with him suggest he had no game plan devised at all for a fourth season. Others provide hints. A few things we do know:

*He hated Season Three. To this day he still hasn't watched much of it.

*He hated Maggie.

*He's very unconventional. He doesn't mind throwing curves and waiting for his audience to catch up.

So it was our conclusion that he'd put the show back on track immediately, and then slowly reveal what has occurred. Season Three hasn't been expunged, but it should be fairly obvious what has happened. If you haven't guessed, all will eventually be revealed and reconciled. But until that time, just sit back and enjoy some good, old fashioned early season styled adventures.

Thanks,

R317

I'll say it again, WOW!!!

Somehow, you have reached inot my brain and pulled out exactly what I would have done in "my" 4th season!

Terrific? Yeah, that's it!

Everything from the intro to the parallel earth storyline to the way both the sliders and the supporting characters were written was very ... dare I say it ... "season 1sh". I'd take this over that pile of muck called "Genesis" any day of the week.

Looking forward to following future adventures. I suspect we'll eventually learn that at some point in season 3 there was a divergence between the "original" sliders and the ones we ended up following for the rest of the season. We know the divergence must happen after "Double Cross" (because of Quinn's mentioning of Prototronics) but before "Slide Like An Egyptian" (because no Egyptian timer). Hmmm ...

*****

"You know, you don't look much like a military man," Thornton said as he sized up Quinn. "Matter of fact, none of you look like servicemen."

"I was in the Navy," volunteered Rembrandt. Arturo rolled his eyes and lit into him.

"For the last time, Mr. Brown, a three month tour with the USO does not make you a Navy man!" chastised the Professor.

Its the most important Sliders chat ever

I've known of this transcript for a long time, and it is in my opinion the best amount of info. you will find about the behind the scenes history of the show from Tracy Torme himself.

As for your musing, I think that if USA had chucked Peck, then you would have had Torme and Weiss involved. Jerry and Cleavant would have been there of course, with their characters finally returning to where they should be. Sabrina and even JRD would most likely have returned. The show would probably still have been taped in Universal Studios in LA. You would have had Arturo return as the guy who didnt get to slide in PTSS, thus the wrong one slid. I seem to doubt Charlie oconnell would have appeared more than perhaps as a guest star here or there, if at all. Maggie would have been gone, sorry Maggie fans, but she represents everything that went wrong with the show. We may have seen some other long-term guest stars. NO Friggin Kromaggs I would have hoped of course. And if one of the principle stars were to leave the show, you would have a more reasonable explaination than Requiem, or Unstuck Man.

What really interests me about that chat is something I just realized. Torme says that Universal wanted to get to 70 episodes following Season 4, hoping to get into syndication. Many have said that Universal only signed on for Season 5 to bring the total to a better syndication number. when in fact 100 episodes is the attractive number. But my question is this....Scifi bought all the episodes in 1997, but Torme didn't seem to consider this syndication, or the kind Universal was looking for. So perhaps that is the key to why Sliders is not on the air after all. After cancellation in Feb. 2000, Universal is somewhat hesitant as to what to do next. with Scifi having very little good programming, they decide to hold onto the show on the air until the old 97 contract ends. TemporalFlux posed that this would happen in June of 2001. So why has nothing happened in over a year????? Because perhaps Universal is still, although somewhat half-assed perhaps, trying to sell the reruns in syndication to someone else, since the old Scifi contract probably made them little money off the show.

Great job, Recall...
