A voice comes over the conference hall sound system, "Distingushed
theorists of Sliding, please be seated as we began a new discussion
on theories."
The lights dim as SE leaves his seat on the dais. He walks up to the
podium with his notes.
"Thank you for coming, my fellow colleagues. For now we will
skip the formalities and get down to business." He clicks a remote
at a digital projector located across the room.
"First lets list the facts regarding Sliding Physics."
The facts are displayed on the screen behind SE as he reads them aloud.
1. The Multiverse contains an as yet undeterminate number of earths/universes.
2. The creation of ERP Bridge is required to tranverse the dimensions.
3. A timer device has been created to allow such travel.
4. An optimal timer allows for a countdown to be set, forcing a traveler
to return to their initial position once the timer has reached its
predetermined countdown.
5. Activating a timer early will damage the device in such a way that
the return feature is damaged. The ability to set the countdown time
is also damaged.
6. It has been accepted as applicable theory that a 29.7 year cycle
does exist in accordance with sliding physics.
SE pauses and takes a sip of water before continueing.
"Ok, Sabreedgian theory time, thank you Stoker_Chick for coining
the phrase from last conference, by the way." :)
"It has been proposed by others in the field of Slideostics,
namely Dr. Flux, that the Multiverse is not static but dynamic. The
Universes are not in a frozen holding pattern."
SE places on the podium a large glass bowl of Sparkling White Grape
Jello complete with suspended pieces of fruit cocktail. A camera zooms
in on the famous dessert and displays it on the screen.
"Ok, some people may believe the multiverse is static, suspended
in space like the fruit pieces. Everything we find out from science
illustrations that nothing is complete static."
He pulls out a huge blender and plops the Jello into it. He turns
it on and everyone watches as the fruit pieces swirl in the blender.
"The multiverse is more likely like this, dynamic. Dimensions
circling in orbits in relation to each other. Sliding allows us to
move from one fruit to the other."
"Quinn Mallory was able to create a couple of devices in his
basement that allowed for sliding. These devices consisted of a timer
and a set of Sliding equipment, which I feel was booster equipment
for the timer. Quinn was able to travel to any world he inputted because
the equipment in the basement provided a "boost" to get to
anywhere in the multiverse. Once the Timer was corrupted, it was only
able to reach out so far to the next passing dimension to create the
bridge. The closest piece of fruit in relation to your own if you will.
The countdown on the timer was made to in effect track the position
of the closest incoming dimension as it circles into close enough range."
Now, I believe the 29.7 year range applied to how long that dimension
took to make a complete revolution back to a position where the timer
could reach out and connect with it again. You ask, 'well, if they
miss that world couldn't they just reprogram for another incoming world?'
In my theory I believe they could... if they knew how. And who is to
say that their present world isn't on the "edge" of the multiverse
where only one other dimension comes close enough to make a bridge.
That lone grape at the top that only comes in contact with that peach.
I think to play it safe, you must assume that this is your only chance
to slide off, and treat it as such.
If you had booster equipment to tap into like Quinn had in his basement
or Jensen had in his lab, you could jump from that top grape in the
blender all the way down to the bottom, or any dimension in between.
It is interesting that the consequences of missing a slide in relation
to the timers was never tested.
"I now open the podium for others to support or refute the theories,
or to present theories of your own. Any questions before hand?"
Darkslider raises his hand in the back, "Um... what are you going
to do with the Jello? ... I uh, could find a use for it..." ;)
