Good Thing, Bad Thing ---> Last of Eden!

From: Blinker

SYNTHIA: Darn it! YOU SAID you were finishing Earth 69 next!!!

BLINKER: Yeah, I just haven't had the time to make them as excruciatingly awful as they deserve. Anyway, I got a very sweet e-mail this morning requesting another episode game, and seeing as it's a lot harder to botch those, here we are! But first, here's the fabulous prizes our viewers will be taking home for their work on "The Breeder":

• FogBoy wins a bag of gummi worms to choke Maggie with!
• Recall317 wins three organs from a guy named Hammond!
• LiquidSunshine wins Julian Lennon's little-known drawing of Liquid in the Sunshine with Delightfulness!
• ThomasMalthus wins his even-lesser-known followup, Lesion in the Sky with Demigods!
• Vigeant wins Maggie's other Fog World outfit, a bra made of burnt-out timer microchips!
• Slider_Quinn21 wins "The Most Gratuitous of First Wave" DVD!
• The_Seer wins Kari's "Is He Hot Or Not?" thermometer!
• MissingSliderLogan wins a vacation on "The Dream Masters"' Cajun World!
• DieselMickeyDolenz wins the collected works of Steam Queen SouthernSlider!
• HurriKain wins the collected Sliders: TNG spin-off, Aelita's Fables!

SYNTHIA: All right, "Last of Eden" it is. My good thing is the visual homage to Ellison's "A Boy and His Dog" as Quinn approaches the underground city...

http://www.earth62.net/epguide/ep_eden14.JPG

BLINKER: Oh, as if Josef Anderson's HEARD of Harlan Ellison. He was probably "paying homage" to his childhood hours spent staring through one end of a toilet paper roll.

SYNTHIA: ...and my bad thing is that the ending is monumentally stupid and pointless. Some people leave the valley. Some people stay. Either way, we never find out what happens to either group or what lies beyond, just that the Hunk of the Week immediately gets into a wrestling match with one of the cannibals.

BLINKER: And for additional effect, we never learn the outcome of THAT event either!

SYNTHIA: Ughghhh...

BLINKER: Okay, my good thing is that for a brief, happy time, this episode had me totally convinced that JRD had rejoined the cast.

SYNTHIA: Oh?

BLINKER: See, I was *utterly* sure during that era that he was just on hiatus and would be popping back to the show any day now. So when I raced to the TV and tuned in to "Last of Eden" partway through, my only regret was having missed how they pulled it off.

SYNTHIA: And your bad thing is that he was gone again the next week?

BLINKER: Oh, heck no! My bad thing is that they didn't play this musical stage description from the Earth 69 version!

SYNTHIA: Uh... we'll see you next time, folks.

Last of Beginning Text? We can only hope.

The good thing here? Quinn actually seems to CARE that Wade has been sucked under ground.

The bad thing? Having to watch Arturo and Remmy repeatedly scratch themselves. Eeeewwww.

The zarnan with kaleidoscope eyes?

I took off my hat and said imagine that, me workin for BT!!

Or was that the zarnan with colitis goes by? I can never remember which is the misheard and which is the right one.

Anyway, instead of trying to find a moral in a game called Good Thing, Bad Thing, I think I'll try to find one good thing in this episode and then one bad thing. Just as a change of pace.

Good Thing: Now that I've learned Josef Anderson wrote this episode, and armed with my knowledge that Recall gave it a positive review, I can only conclude that "Time Again and World" is that much closer to being accepted as one of the best episodes of "Sliders" ever.

Bad Thing: This episode could have been a triumphant tour-de-force send off for the Professor that made up for his brutally excessive death in "The Exodus". Instead, it shows itself as the left-over it is, with little for the Professor to do except reveal to Rembrandt that he was dying, which functioned only as a sad reminder of what would, er, did, er, might...

Blast these out of order episodes! That's the real bad thing: Fox's arbitrary airing order for "Sliders"! What else could explain Maggie's poor and inconsistent character development in the third season, which made all fans long for any episode where the Professor returned, even this one?

I mean other than the fact that Peckinpah's a moron.

Hip, but not too futuristic

Good Thing: Real character development. Credit must be given when it's due, and there are some very nice character scenes here.

Bad Thing: Recycled plot development. When in doubt, turn to "get caught, escape, get caught again, escape again, get caught one more time...run around some more"

I'll leave the three earths in one orbit for others to pick apart.

BT can't remember >:-#!!!

I have only the vaguest recollection of this ep. I have it on tape but why would I want to ruin a perfectly good day by actually WATCHING this piece of >:-#?

Good thing: That I have almost completely blocked this ep from my mind.

Bad thing: That I remember the hideously lame opening. Oh, I've had a bad dream! Lemme tell you about it so I can segue into this ep that is being shown out of sequence!

>:-#

And speaking of memory, you ROCK Blinker!! :-D

Ahhhhh yes

Soooooo many choices...

The Good Thing: To broaden our horizons, Peckinpah and Anderson decided to bring us all a taste of Vegas by including the monkey antics of Cirque de Sole'.

The Bad Thing: To broaden our horizons, Peckinpah and Anderson decided to remake The Time Machine without an actual time machine involved. Oh! But wait! Sliders was a time travel show...they didn't need a time machine! ;-)

There's nothing good about BT at all!

Good-Peckinpah proves he's psychic and spoofs a movie that hadn't been created yet.

Bad-Peckinpah convinces the producers he's godlike by spoofing a movie that hadn't been created yet. Thus ending Torme's run.

Good Thing, Bad Thing ---> Creativity!

=========================================================

Interesting.

Callie21V sleeps on the dark side of Blinker's brain today - and Blinker, in turn, has taken advantage of that.

For instead of working on something of his own; a creative, ORIGINAL work, he has chosen to take the easy path and instead goof on a Sliders episode.

This is Blinker DEFINED™.

Keep using "sweet e-mails" to distance and neuter yourself from anything that even remotely resembles something that didn't spring from the mind of someone else.

That is all.

MSTing BT is EZ coz it sucks!!

<Interesting.>

Blinker's episode game post? Yes. This reply? Not really.

<Callie21V sleeps on the dark side of Blinker's brain today>

Is that like "There's a little black spot on the sun today?" At any rate, it displays the same level of intellectual depth (with an apology to Sting fans).

<-and Blinker, in turn,>

Using a blinker to turn IS what the Department of Motor Vehicles recommends, but I can understand your reluctance to comply.

<has taken advantage of that.>

And you're out to protect the chastity of our pronouns?

<For instead of working on something of his own;>

Hello and welcome to the Sliders Episode Game Series, created and emceed by Blinker! As of always! Do you really think Sliders fans care that the idea came from another board (which Blinker admitted to by the way)? It's Blinker's spin on it, his creative comments and jibes and the fact that it is "Sliders" that makes it his own creative endeavor.

<a creative, ORIGINAL work,>

So you acknowledge that Blinker is capable of creativity and originality? Perhaps there's hope for you yet.

<he has chosen to take the easy path>

Huh. I thought the easy path was the one where you produce nothing worthwhile and tear down those who do. Hint: look down.

<and instead goof on a Sliders episode.>

I'm sorry, when did it become Blinker's job to entertain you? Was I absent that day?

<This is Blinker DEFINED™.>

And this is Blinker DEFINED by TM: A cool, funny poster who always has poignant observations, laugh-out loud comedy and informative links to share with his fellow BBoarders. Canadian.

<Keep using "sweet e-mails">

Mmmm...sweet e-mails.... Wait, is that like sweetbread?

<to distance and neuter yourself from anything>

How do you neuter yourself from something? Does a eunuch neuter himself from his testicles?

<that even remotely resembles something that didn't spring from the mind of someone else.>

Like Artemis springing out of Zeus' head? No, that would be a more apropos analogy for Hunter.

OK, Greek mythology boy, get this: You're pathetic. Most of what you say doesn't even make sense when you examine it closely. And you have absolutely no reason to tear Blinker down. Particularly not for this.

This is not Blinker's job. He owes you nothing. If you want new creative works, why don't you create some yourself? Try doing something constructive, instead of wasting my time and Blinker's (I'm sure he read your reply).

If this is some kind of bad joke by a known and respected poster on this board, I'd almost be willing to let it slide. But if this is just some loser troll hurling faux intellectual overly harsh criticisms at people who've done nothing to deserve it, let's just say this won't be the last time we'll have a war of words.

<That is all.>

For everyone's sake, let's hope so.

Last of Eden? I don't really remember this episode either, so to carry on with my amusing post, I replace myself with a singing fish. I hope he's as entertaining as I ever could be.

and your homo references obviously indicate a deep seated problem. Again, just out ourself and you will be a lot happier. Face facts, you are not going to drive Blinker away with all of your little sexual attacks that are most suited towards yourself. My guess is that in three to six months you will be just a (bad) memory to the people on this board. The rest of us will still be here and you will be curled up sobbing in the arms of another guy named butch.

I had to put the tape in...

Date: 07/29/2002
From: MissingSliderRyan

BT watched all of it for me.

... and fast forward it to this part which is a good thing...

Remmy: <taking a bite of fruit> It's good. It tastes like apples.

Arturo: <puts on bib> Hmm. I really fancy a piece of steak myself. <takes a bite of fruit> It *is* steak. <takes another bite> This is extraodinary. Anything that you can think of, it tastes like. Try it.

Remmy: Cheeseburger. <takes a bite> It does. How do they do that?

We all know what Arturo was thinking when he was sighing contently.... Mayo and Wade. :-P Hungry Arturo and his bib... Bwahahahahaha

The bad thing...

The editing of the above scene. Right after Remmy asks why Arturo had a bad reaction to the plant and Arturo tells him that it's due to different immunities, Arturo's watch jumps from 2:25 to 2:05 in three seconds of real time. From then onward, the time on his watch is from 2:05.

I've been trained to spot inconsistencies. I had one manager call me Eagle Eyes for spotting something out of the ordinary. :-D

"Last of Eden"? Good riddance!

Date: 07/29/2002
From: The_Seer

And good riddance to BT too.

*****

Good things ...
1) Well, it was better than that Star Trek episode with the word "Eden" in its title.
2) To those of you that can't remember much about this episode: trust me, that in itself is a good thing.

Bad things ...
1) A lot of people have been praising the characterization in this episode and the "moments" that Remmy-Arturo and Quinn-Wade had but to me they seemed a bit forced. Like when Remmy mentioned those worlds where the Professor had acted strange, it seemed like he was just reading episode descriptions right off of earthprime.com or some other sliders web site. And you knew Remmy was going to be mad at Arturo for about as long as it is takes for this message to post on the board. Then that supposed "moment" Quinn and Wade have where Wade sees how Quinn is with the baby and they both talk about how they'd like to have kids. All that really came out of that was that we know Quinn is good with kids and we know the exact number of kids each one wants to have. Nothing was really done in that context that explored their relationship (romantic or otherwise) in any way.
2) We get a steady dose of "Action Quinn" saving the day and kickin' butt (*groan*).

and finally ...

3) Having Maggie in this episode might have actually made it better!
