Good Thing, Bad Thing™: Applied Physics

Date: 12/13/2000
From: Blinker

Hey, don't feel bad about missing out on yesterday's post. All you're forgoing is a 30-page discussion with my holographic alter ego about how lame the whole 'unstuck' business is. Excerpt:

BLINKER: Well, obviously whatever world the guy passes through, for the duration of his stay, is rendered unable to... reproduce.
SYNTHIA: Oh yeah, THAT'S it!!! Geiger can't spin off any more doubles because he's dimensionally NEUTERED! Does Henry the Sliding Dog know about this?!?

- PRIZE PATROL -

• Sli... er, Blinker_Quinn21 wins a pineapple plantation!
• Recall317 wins a truckload of shotgun ammo and our blessings!
• Brand_S wins a T-shirt with his inspiring quote on the front!
• EustiSlider wins Catherine Clark's hand in marriage! ...Sorry, the hand was all we could get.
• Vigeant wins an authentic Ally McBeal miniskirt autographed by Calista Flockhart!
• Wrong_Arturo wins a copy of MSZ's original script!
• ThomasMalthus™ wins a copy of this 7:-#ing weird Mac shareware game I picked up, 'DubbelMoral.' Basically you're this little cartoon guy that finds dozens of beer bottles laying around outside and has to drink as many as possible before an old lady shows up and stones him to death with pebbles. Unfortunately, every bit of text in the thing is in Swedish or something, so if you could explain to me what the 7:-# it's all about, I'd be really appreciative. Thanks!

• The first GOLD STAR of the season goes to Brand_S, for the funniest take on that $%&#%#& giant scene I've heard to date!

= GOOD THING, BAD THING - APPLIED PHYSICS =

BLINKER: Well, the good thing is that we get a delightful flashback montage of such classics as 'Desert Storm' and 'Electric Twister Acid Test.' The bad thing is realizing that Floyd/Mallory conveys more grief over the loss of Arturo than Quinn has in over a year... and he DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHO THE GUY IS.

SYNTHIA: Highlight -- for once, an ending that isn't tied up neater than Felix's side of the New New Odd Couple's apartment. Lowlight -- a world with 100% immersive virtual reality, and it's changed society NOT AT ALL.

BLINKER: What's so strange about that? It's not like when the Internet came along, you started getting people spending entire days online and accomplishing 7>:-# nothing...

SYNTHIA: Hey, your e-mail is in. Let's see, another two SLIDER75 EMERGENCY BULLETINS...

BLINKER: Um, anyway. What're YOUR good things and bad things, folks?

Good:Diana is here! Great character!

Bad:Why is Diana here again?

And the Good Thing and Bad Thing are...

Date: 12/13/2000
From: Brand_S

+: Diana got some attention! This is one of the only eps in which she gets the attention she deserves and is shown as a deep character. That Tembi Locke is incredibly hot doesn't hurt either!

-: WHY did she trust Dr. Geiger? WHY? The man is an evil scientist with stupid hair who doesn't even have that convincing a voice. But then, it's been a while since I saw this episode, so I can't say for sure.

It's all good

Good: I didn't switch channels once during the entire episode! A rare feat.

Bad: I've liked the first two episodes of Season 5 more than all but one Season 4 episode. I've fallen into one of the show's gaps of logic and continuity and can't find my way out!

Good thing, bad thing, ummmm...

...er, OK, good thing, right. Well, you've got physics in the title, right? And, and if you're going to have physics it'd just be a darn shame if they weren't APPLIED, right? And there was something about a Diana double, too, that was, um, decent. (OK, I admit it. My recollections of Season Five consist entirely of Remmy and Maggie being thoroughly too chummy for my taste, Diana being completely underused and Mallory consistently dressing in weird clothing. I've never seen any single episode more than once and I haven't seen every episode of Season Five. Sue me. Please. I need the publicity.)

Bad thing: The fact that the writers dropped the Diana-is-a-Kromagg-gene-splicing-experiment-that-combines-DNA-from-Remmy-and-Diana-Ross storyline just so they could do this story with a Diana double. I mean, really, what was Peckinpah thinking? Which is a question that's kind of a compliment to him when you think about it, because it implies that he actually does thi... wait, which season was this again?!?

Good? Bad? Why all the labels?

The good? Right, just a second whilst I put Ms. Clark's hand in the fridge. If you leave those things out too long they start to turn bad.

OK! The good: Childless Alt-Diana makes one Hell of a Fembot.

The bad: "You probably think you messed up really bad. Well, you did. But hey, you're human." So now destroying an entire universe is just an "oops." At least they can't say Quinn never did the same thing (see As Time Goes By).

Unhappy Endings!

Date: 12/14/2000
From: FogBoy

Good: Unhappy endings CAN happen. Even in later seasons. My.

Bad: Diana's asshole boyfriend is named 'Doug.' Must we destroy that name?

Well, FogBoy...

From: Brand_S

I think I can sympathize. After all, my name sounds so Arabic that every time there's a terrorist attack my name gets destroyed.

But then, the one movie/TV character I've seen with a name similar to mine was in the Indiana Jones movies. He got played by that kickass actor John Rhys-Davies, played a pretty significant role, and even though he probably didn't look "all that" naked, you were glad he was in the movie. Okay, maybe I can't sympathize THAT much... Aw, yes I can. After all, by all accounts, I should be decrying you "propaganda-spreading, democratic, Western, foreign devils!" But, again, I'm the nice one!

Good Thing Bad Thing?

From: Vigeant

GT: It was an episode which didn't have the word 'slide' in the title, this alone is a sign of something great.

BT: Already to the second episode and they screwed up about three earths altering everything. Good job Diana! No wonder she just fades off into nowhere, geeze!!

Actually I like Diana, really I do!

"Good job son, if you can't figure it all out at first then it isn't worth learning."

I think that ...

Bad Thing : Robert Floyd

IIIIIIIIIT'S SLIDERULES!

Date: 12/14/2000
From: sliderules

Okie dokie smoky, here we go!

Good Thing: A return to the basics of sliding, trusting someone only to get betrayed yet again. Plus, good acting for the first time since "Guardian."

Bad Thing: Mallory playing football with college students. Five years ago Quinn Mallory was in college, so why would he still be hanging out with frat boys?
